• *VERMEIL refers to a processing technique where gold is applied. It is called "gold-clad silver" and generally refers to a combination of sterling silver (SV925) and gold. Since gold is melted and applied (adhered) onto silver, it is a very costly technique and therefore a high-priced item. (To be recognized as vermeil, the gold content must be at least 10K or higher, and the thickness must be 1.5 microns or more.)
• *Gold-filled refers to a material where gold is bonded to a base metal (nickel). Unlike gold plating, which has a thin layer of gold, gold-filled items are created by heat-bonding a thick layer of gold, so the plating will not peel or wear off, exposing the base metal, even with long-term use. Another feature, unlike plating, is its smooth, deep luster.
